Benefits and disadvantages of sailing holidays Greece

There are advantages and disadvantages to sailing. It is advantageous to be able to choose your traveling group of friends. It’s fun to sail with friends and is a good option for families too. You can also choose to go wherever you’d like to travel. You can stop by beaches which only boats are allowed access to or go to a tiny island for an entire day.

The drawbacks of sailing are that it isn’t a good choice for people who are motion sick! The motion of a sailboat isn’t suitable for all. Your plans are dependent on the weather. Therefore, sailing is ideal for those who don’t require a specific plan, and are able to change it in the blink of an eye. Yachts aren’t always big also as there’s a limited amount of area to retreat to for those who want to remain in peace. The limitations are numerous, especially in tanks for water, which means you won’t be able to enjoy long, hot showers.

However, despite these disadvantages yachting is still a favorite way to discover all of the Greek islands!

Sailing zones in Greece

Poros Island

With more than 6,000 islands, Greece is a great destination to go sailing on a cruise. The most sought-after destinations are those of the Argo Saronic islands, from which my crew and I took a sail along with the Dodecanese and Ionian Islands, Ionian Islands, and the Cyclades.

It is located in the Saronic Gulf is nearest to Athens and is an ideal location for a few days when you don’t wish to wander too far. Some of the islands in this area include Spetses, Hydra, Aegina and Poros. These islands are dotted with pine trees , and have charming towns and a peaceful atmospherethat belies their rich history and pivotal actions in the Greco-Turkish conflict.

Hydra is renowned as a car-free town, and Spetses hosts stunning Mansions as well as museums. On the way, you may also stop by several towns on the mainland in the Peloponnese and continue through the coast until Monemvasia as well as Nafplio.

The Dodecanese Islands lie situated to the east of mainland Greece and sit at the intersection of civilisation along the famous Silk Road. The principal islands are Kos, Rhodes, Patmos and Kalymnos to mention just the few. A lot of islands are peaceful, however If you’re looking to enjoy Greek nightlife, you should visit Rhodes or Kos to enjoy a night out.

The Ionian Islands are famous for many things, such as the breathtaking Shipwreck Beach on Zakynthos, the legendary location of Odysseus, Ithaca, and for being the home of prominent royals such as Empress Sisi and Prince Philip. These islands in the west are famous for water sports, such as windsurfing and scuba diving.

The Cyclades comprises more than 30 islands, lie to the south of the mainland. It comprises Santorini, Mykonos, Ios, Tinos, Delos, Milos and many more. Every island is unique in its story and charm, and some are believed to be as the birthplace of gods and goddesses from Greek mythology. There’s a great nightlife on Mykonos and Ios as well as a rich spiritual history on Tinos and Ios, and excellent diving.

What Should You Pack for the sailing Holiday

What you require to enjoy a sailing vacation isn’t too much! Take along your swimsuit shorts, t-shirts, shorts sunglasses, and sandals. Ladies may want to pack sundresses to go out into town, while men might need a nice shirt for a night out.

If you are planning to go to the club within Mykonos or Rhodes making sure you check your dress code an excellent idea. Likewise, should you plan to hike, you’ll need good shoes and clothes that you can sweat in. However, you don’t require anything! It’s rare to wear shoes to yachts, and you’ll not need lots of expensive clothes.

Also, you don’t have to bring bedding, cooking equipment or kitchen appliances. If you own aquatic toys which are simple to transport (blow-up rafts, etc.) you could bring them. Make sure you pack your personal medications and toiletries.

Do I need to rent a catamaran or monohull?

There are pros and cons to every type of yacht. Monohulls are solid and almost impossible to capsize because it is able to tack and heal fast. The boats of this type respond swiftly to the driver who is at the steering wheel. Monohull yachts are also known to be cheaper to charter, which makes them more affordable for young travelers.

They provide an adrenaline-pumping experience as the boat is on the water, it could be close to the ocean. The drawbacks of a monohull boat are that they are generally smaller and cramped. The living areas are all below the waterline, which makes air circulation a problem sometimes.

A catamaran in contrast provides more space for larger parties, but for the same amount of space, they are often three times the cost of the monohull. The boat is solid and stable, and there’s less rolling and rocking, which is ideal for people with motion sickness, or for younger children or elderly people. Catamarans require more space on the dock, yet they are very maneuverable, and there’s no need for bow thruster.

In the end, it all boils down to personal taste as well as group size budget, and boat availability.

Do you require a permit to charter an boat?

Yes! If you charter a boat it is required that at least one member of the crew must hold a sailing permit or sailing course certificate or a declaration signed by them that demonstrates their ability to sail.

Licenses for sailing issued through European Union countries are automatically valid and recognized in Greece. Licenses from outside the EU are accepted as long as they comply with EU standards. Licenses that are not in English or Greek need to be translated.

A sailing holiday in Greece is perfect for families as well as groups of friends or larger groups that would like to charter multiple vessels and travel as an entire flotilla. It is yours to choose what you’d like to do whenever you’d like and you can be as active you want or do as you want. A trip on the water can be affordable as well with no port charges and minimal fuel usage. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time sailing and are eager to repeat the same thing again.
